We run weekly swing dance classes on Wednesdays at The Actor’s – upstairs in the Theatre.
Booking information below. You do not need to bring a partner and we will be rotating partners.
About the Course
Courses follow a four- or five-week structure depending on the month. If you are a beginner, you can join on the first Wednesday of each month. The aim of this structure is to progress week-by-week with the same friendly faces. We offer two levels to best accommodate a range of experiences and make dancing the most fun across different levels of ability. We have chosen the course format for its perks:
1) Courses allow us to develop on skills and ideas between weeks better than sporadic classes. Committing to multiple weeks will build your learning and confidence!
2) We run courses by the month – so if there are 5 Wednesdays in a month that’s a whole free week!
3) It’s cheaper for you! In this economy don’t let money be a reason you can’t dance! We do our best to be inclusive with our pricing. We also have a no-questions-asked policy for concessions. (See financial support below)
Concession Policy
We have a no-questions-asked Concessions Policy – please choose the Concession price if you feel you need it.
If you enjoy our classes and want to support our community, please consider the Supporter rate if you can afford it. It helps us to be able to pay our teachers, DJs and musicians fairly and to keep our events and classes sustainable.
Further Support
We want to be able to offer everyone the chance to dance. If you cannot afford the concession rate, please get in touch at aftersupperswing@gmail.com or via our social media and we’ll be happy to work something out!
Level One is beginner-friendly and aims to develop newer dancers’ social dancing skills, and familiarity with the rhythms and connections used in partnered swing dancing. If you’ve been dancing for less than a year, you’re welcome here!
Level Two is for more experienced dancers who want to keep exploring and developing style, creativity and expression in their dancing. We recommend you have taken Level 1 three times, and once in your opposite role, as well as having at least 6 hours of social dancing under your belt before signing up for this course.
Do I need a partner?
No, no partner is needed as we rotate partners.
I am a complete beginner, where do I start?
Start with our Level 1 course, which starts on the first Wednesday of each month.
Will you no longer be taking any payments on the door?
No, there won’t be any payments on the door for Wednesday classes. If you’d like to attend, please buy a pass. If this really does not work for you, please get in touch via socials or via aftersupperswing@gmail.com and we can work something out. Our new Thursday classes are still drop-in and pay on the door.
I want to sign up with a partner but I don’t want to rotate partners in class, is that OK?
Yes, that’s totally fine – just mention it to the teachers before the class.
Is the content of the course the same each month?
For Level 1, we will have themed weeks which will cover roughly the same rhythms and concepts, though the moves will differ. That’s why you can start fresh on the first Wednesday of each month. Of course, different teachers will always bring their own flavour and insights. After three months, you’ll have a nice collection of moves for the social floor!
For Level 2, we will be encouraging teachers to share their own take on the dance still, building on content from Level 1. You will learn more ways to connect and be musical, as well as more complex but classic moves like Tandem Charleston, swingout variations, footwork variations and techniques like counterbalance.
What do I wear?
Comfy, breathable clothes and flat shoes that aren’t too sticky. Most people come as they are.
Where do I go?
Classes are at the Actors Pub in Kemptown. From the main entrance, keep going down the corridor and go up the stairs to find the Theatre.
What is your cancellation and refund policy?
We cannot offer refunds and all sales are final. You may transfer your pass to someone else or defer your pass to another month, please email us at aftersupperswing@gmail.com to arrange. Please try to give as much notice as possible.
If you need to miss the odd Level 1 class out of a block, please don’t worry, you’ll catch up – just let the teachers know and lean on other dancers to help.
